What is a Bridging Open Work Permit?

This is an option for foreign workers in Canada who are currently working on a work permit which will soon expire, but are awaiting approval of their permanent residence application. In the interim, they can apply for this Open Work Permit until they are approved of their permanent residence. Applicants can have a Employer Specific Work Permit and transition into an Open Work Permit.

The following are the general eligibility requirements for Bridging Open Work Permit, please note that there are additional requirements depending on the eligible program. For eligible Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) they must not carry work location restrictions for the Foreign Worker. Additional requirements can be found here.

  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
  • Home Child-Care Provider Pilot
  • Home Support Worker Pilot
  • Caring for People with High Medical Needs
  • Caring for Children
  • Agri-Food Pilot
  • Inland Spouses/Common-Law Partners
  • Work Permit has expired
  • Foreign Workers who are exempted from a Work Permit under R. 186. (
  • Foreign Worker has a new LMIA
  • Foreign Worker is through a port of entry.
  • Provincial Nominee who has restrictions
