What is the Express Entry Program?

Introduced on January 1, 2015, the Express Entry (EE) program is an electronic application management system that processes Permanent Residence Applications that are under three federal (3) program streams:

  • Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
  • Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Additionally, some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) require applicants to be processed through the Express Entry Program.

How does the Express Entry work?

Applicants create an Express Entry Profile online and fill out information such as their skills, education, language ability, work experience, etc. Based on the collected information in your profile, it will be added to the Express Entry Pool. The system will determine your eligibility using a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which will rank candidates in the pool.

Express Entry allows Canadian employers, provinces and territories to recruit and select skilled migrants from the Express Entry Pool. The selection is conducted through Express Entry Draws, which are held several times each year. Each draw will have a set number of invitations. For example, the minister extends 200 invitations, and this means the top-ranked 200 candidates of the Express Entry Pool will be given an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence.

Candidates and their families who wish to settle in Canada can also accompany the candidate and obtain their Permanent Residence.
